AMS Scholarship for Underserved Communities (formerly Minority Scholarship): Under-represented students who belong mainly to the Hispanic, Native American, or Black/African American communities will be funded through the AMS Scholarships for Underserved Communities. The money to finance the scholarships comes from donors who donate towards the AMS Annual Giving Program. AMS strives for and promotes equal participation in all its work among various communities within America. AMS promotes the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equality in all aspects of the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrological sciences.
Eligibility
- The applicants should be either American citizens or have a permanent residence permit.
Eligible are students who will be starting their freshman year of college in the fall of 2025 - Students should plan for a career in the atmospheric, hydrological, or marine science fields. Marine biology is not eligible.
- The applicant should score a cumulative grade average of at least 3.0 on a four-point scale.
- On the other hand, underserved students who qualify for a scholarship in this category can also apply for the AMS Freshman Scholarship Award.
Aid Packages
The $6,000 two-year scholarship (two years’ full amount depending upon successful completion of the first academic year).
Application Procedures
- Completed application form
- A copy of an official high school transcript showing the last three years.
- The applicant should include one letter of recommendation from a teacher or the guidance counsellor from high school.
- It is up to the applicants to maintain time for the completion of tasks so that they can submit their applications before the deadline date. Applications will not be submitted if all stages are not complete.
