Eastern’s most prestigious award for incoming first-year students, the Presidential Scholarship, covers full tuition and room and board for four years (valued at approximately $100,000). Presidential Scholars are active and engaged members of The Honours College at EMU, complementing their academic college experience with further opportunities for critical thinking, community engagement, and leadership. Qualified students can apply for the Presidential Scholarship during their senior year of high school.
Founded in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School, it was the fourth normal school (teachers’ college) established in the United States and the first American normal school founded outside New England. In 1899, the Michigan State Normal School became the first normal school in the nation to offer a four-year curriculum and gained the name Michigan State Normal College. In 1959, the college became a university and gained its current name, Eastern Michigan University.

Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the Presidential Scholarship at EMU, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be a high school senior graduating in 2024 or 2025
- Have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and a composite ACT score of 25 or a combined SAT score of 1200 (Critical Reading + Math).
- SAT/ACT requirements are waived for students with a GPA of 3.85 or higher.
- You can apply for admission to Eastern Michigan University and submit all official transcripts and test scores by the scholarship deadline.

- For eligibility, your visit must be completed during the 2024 calendar year. An official campus visit is considered a campus tour, an open house, or a virtual admissions event. Find our visit options at emich.edu/visit.

These sessions allow interested students to talk with current Scholars about why they’re glad they came to EMU and learn how to best prepare for the Presidential Scholars Competition. Deadline for Eastern Michigan University Presidential Scholarships
Mark these important dates on your calendar to ensure a successful application process:
- December 14, 2024: Deadline to submit all application materials and complete the campus visit.
- All official admission documents must also be submitted to EMU by this date.
- January 15, 2025: Notification date for students moving on to the second round.
- February 8, 2025: Finalist interviews. Selected finalists will be invited to campus for an in-person interview or a virtual interview if they reside a substantial distance from Michigan.
