The SBW Berlin Scholarship supports talented young international students from abroad who have already demonstrated social commitment and who use the skills they have acquired during their studies during and after their studies in social projects in a non-profit/social organisation in their home countries.
Our scholarship recipients work on social projects while studying in Berlin. Ideally, these projects are part of the charitable work of organisations in their home countries and/or contribute to improving living conditions there.
After successfully completing their studies, our scholarship recipients are expected to continue and develop projects in their home countries with the skills they have acquired here.

All specializations available at the universities of Berlin or Potsdam are available, such as: medicine, engineering, pharmacy, law, and all scientific and literary specializations available at the universities of Berlin and Potsdam.

SBW Scholarship Terms
- Between the ages of 18 and 30
- Professional or volunteer experience in the non-profit/social sector (supported by letters of recommendation from the social enterprise or non-profit organization)
- Not having resided in Germany for more than 18 months prior to applying
- University Admission Qualification*
- Intention to work for at least 18 months in the country of origin after graduation or to participate in charitable activities in Germany until the repayment plan is fulfilled
- Relatively low net income (see guidelines)
- Average grade point average equivalent to German average of at least 2.0
- No immediate family members permanently residing in Germany
- Apply before the start of studies or be fully enrolled in the first, second or third semester at the latest at a state-recognised university (in Germany or abroad) or apply for a master’s degree before or shortly after obtaining a bachelor’s degree
How to Apply
When applying for a scholarship, proof of the applicant’s social commitment in the form of a letter of recommendation from a non-profit organization or social enterprise is required. The non-profit organization or social enterprise sends the letter on behalf of the applicant as a PDF file to application@sbw.berlin After a careful review of the letter, outstanding candidates will be given access to the application form.
