The Academy and Charitable School was established in 1740 by four Philadelphians, Benjamin Franklin, Francis, John, and William Smith, with the express goal of giving young people “a good English and classical education.” The Pennsylvania Legislature granted the founders a charter in 1749, establishing the College of Philadelphia. King George II of England granted the college a royal charter in 1755, which allowed it to become the University of Pennsylvania.
