Benefits

  • Vanier CGS provides a $50,000 grant per year for three years.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a Canadian or international student studying in Canada.
  • Must be pursuing a PhD programme full-time at a Canadian institution.
  • Nomination is required from a university with a Vanier CGS quota (updated list available on July 1).
  • The first PhD programme is being pursued.
  • Not receiving CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC doctoral funding.
  • Must have a first-class average in the last two years of studies.
  • Joint professional degree candidates (MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD) are eligible for PhD tenure funding only.
  • The research proposal must have a significant research component.
  • You cannot be faculty at a university with a Vanier quota or any other institution without being granted leave for the PhD programme.
  • Must be enrolled full-time; part-time enrollment is possible for disability or family support, with an adjusted study duration calculation.
  • Canadian federal government employees are eligible for unpaid leave.
  • Can apply for both Vanier and agency-specific PhD scholarships but must choose only one if awarded multiple scholarships.

Deadline

Institutional Internal Deadline: Each Canadian institution sets its own internal deadline for candidates to submit their applications. This deadline will be visible on ResearchNet once the candidate selects the institution. Applicants must adhere to the specific deadline set by their chosen institution.

Programme Deadline: The deadline for the nominating institutions to submit their nominations to the Vanier CGS programme is October 30, 2024. Institutions must ensure all applications are submitted by this date.

  • Verify Vanier CGS Quota: Ensure that the selected institution has a Vanier CGS quota for nominating candidates. This information is typically available on the institution’s website or can be confirmed by contacting their scholarship or graduate studies office.
  • Complete ResearchNet Application: Access the ResearchNet platform and complete the Vanier CGS application form. This form will guide you through all the required steps for the application process.
  • Language of Application: Choose either English or French as the language for your application. The form and supporting documents can be submitted in either language.
  • Document Presentation Standards: Follow the presentation standards provided for attaching documents. Ensure documents are formatted correctly and meet the specified guidelines for submission.
  • Complete Mandatory Tasks: Complete all mandatory sections and tasks on the ResearchNet application form. Provide accurate and complete information as required.
  • Submit Application: Before submitting your application, ensure that all sections and attachments are complete and accurate. Once submitted, the application status will show as “complete” in ResearchNet.
  • Editing Application (If Returned): If your application is returned by the institution on ResearchNet with revisions required, you can edit and resubmit it within the specified timeframe.
  • Nomination Confirmation: If your application is selected by the institution for nomination, you will receive an automated email notification from ResearchNet acknowledging receipt of your application.
  • Application Status Inquiry: If you do not receive any notification within a reasonable timeframe, you can contact the institution directly to inquire about the status of your application.
  • Final Submission: Once nominated by the institution, the application process on ResearchNet is considered complete and final. No further modifications can be made to the application.
