GRE and GMAT: do you need them?

Some postgraduate programmes ask for these tests, many do not.

What they are

  • GRE General Test: used by many master's and PhD programmes, especially in the USA. Verbal and Quantitative sections are each scored from 130 to 170.
  • GMAT: used mainly by business schools and MBA programmes.

Do you need one?

Check each programme's entry requirements. Many universities have made these tests optional, and some business schools accept either the GRE or the GMAT.

Planning

Scores are usually valid for five years. Give yourself two to three months of preparation and book your test date early enough to retake it if needed before deadlines.
